FinDev Canada backs African agricultural supply chains with up to US$40 million

On September 16, 2026, FinDev Canada announced a loan of up to US$40 million to Robust International, a Singapore-based agribusiness specializing in sesame, cashew and soybean. The financing will support local procurement in Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Togo and Tanzania, with the aim of giving farmers more reliable access to buyers.

The initiative also includes support for climate-resilient farming practices and greater participation by women in agricultural supply chains, including through women-owned businesses that collect and supply crops. FinDev Canada links the investment to Canada’s Africa Strategy and its objectives for resilient supply chains and economic development.

For Canada–Africa relations, the transaction offers a concrete example of development finance supporting agricultural production and market connections. More dependable demand could help farmers invest in crop quality and productivity. The development value will depend on how those commercial relationships work in practice, including whether smaller producers gain stable purchasing arrangements and women gain meaningful economic opportunities. These are useful outcomes to follow as the financing is implemented.
